Civil engineering which is one of the oldest professional engineering disciplines,
deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment,
including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. It is traditionally divided into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering,
geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, and construction engineering etc.
It is necessary for people to provide for their needs such as roads, railways, harbours, airports, coastal protection, electrical supplies,
transportations, water supplies and dams. At the same time, maintaining the facilities and protecting environments are also regarded as important in our modern life.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of Yamaguchi University is an innovative and vibrant place of learning, where undergraduates,
graduate students and postdoctoral researchers pursue their educational and research interests in order to lead the next generation in transforming the disciplines of
civil and environmental engineering and to make a beautiful and safe world against the enhanced natural disasters due to climate change and global warming.
In our research, we seek to understand natural systems, to promote the intelligent use of resources and to design sustainable infrastructure systems for our future generation.
Furthermore, we have established the " East Asia International Course " to educate students to be international civil engineers equipped with professional
leadership in the field by focusing on technological innovations, seeking advances in basic knowledge and captivating a systems attitude.
The educational program of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) has been recognized to be of international level by the Japan Accreditation
Board for Engineering Education (JABEE). With this recognition, our graduates can acquire the qualification of associate engineer (gijutsushiho) upon application.
" Think globally but act locally, personally and environment friendly ", this is the motto of us.
How do I choose an area of study?
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering encourages innovative teaching practices to meet the academic and professional needs of its students.
